Illustrative 3-Dimensional Perspective Map Services

Birds eye view map

Hand-rendered illustrated maps are created by literally sitting down at a drafting table with client provided resources, then with pencils, ink a sketch is created in stages for review and comment. Once the final footprint is agreed upon, the pencil / ink image is then blended with electronic watercolor based painting techniques. This unique technique has a very distinctive charm and character all its own, but what separates our art from others is the richness of traditional hand-rendering and the very same artist’s hand bringing the images to life with state of the art colorization and texture.

By creating our client’s art using cutting edge technology, the images can be created in layers and groups. This is very important since most of this kind of art should have the intention and means to be altered, updated and segmented to meet the long-term goals and uses of our clients.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What type of client-provided reference materials are typically needed?

The key pieces of information for map illustrations needed from our clients to effectively complete a 3D perspective campus mapping project include:

1. A high quality site plan showing buildings and their identity.

2. Good quality photos or renderings of each of the building to be drawn taken from the direction of the bird’s eye view (but from ground level). If a web interative map is desired, a higher quality of images will be needed before the completion of the project.

3. Identification of the long range graphic needs (i.e. layers, groups, colors, etc.)

4. What formats are needed for the end product.

In addition to client provided materials, during creating illustrated maps Illustrative Maps will also use several of its satellite imagery resources as well as other mapping resources.

What types of files are delivered when the job is complete?

Our firm will typically deliver finished artwork as a high-resolution layer rich Adobe Photoshop and /or Illustrator. Since our artwork is rendered using software in developing the original artwork, hand-rendered maps are generally editable!

This unique feature of editablity makes our client’s investment in their artwork a long term investment. Add another building? We can add that and your map is up to date. Want to show your campus with that new building to high profile donors? With a good conceptual rendering, it is possible for us to modify your artwork in days, not weeks and months – all consistent with existing view points, colors, tones and textures.

Who owns the copyright to the artwork that is developed?

Our clients acquire the usage rights as part of the fees. The usage rights must be specified in the contract.

First, the fees that have been mutually agreed upon, must be paid in-full before Illustrative Maps will officially turn over the agreed rights to the completed artwork.

The second important qualification relates to Illustrative Maps retaining the right to use copies of the artwork in effort to promote our services to prospective clients. We essentially are obtaining written authorization from our clients to utilize copies of the artwork in print and electronic form for self-promotional purposes. We showcase our clients and that is how we demonstrate our capabilities and range.

What does it typically cost to develop this style of map?

Costs for developing 3D perspective campus maps will directly depend upon the total number of buildings and other facilities (athletic fields, gardens, sculpture, etc.) that need to be included within the finished project. Illustrative Maps have developed dozens of maps and illustrations over the years and we can provide a comprehensive budget quickly once an overview of scope is communicated.

Since we use 100% digital methodologies, we don’t have to alter our process to accommodate the end use. This efficiencies mean that our clients obtain working and a long-term asset for a remarkably reasonable cost. When you contract with Illustrative maps we don’t outsource your work, like many firms do. Our clients work directly with the principal, Maria Rabinky. Ms. Rabinky is very efficient and has a unique ability to create lasting art - the first time. This efficiency enable Illustrative Maps to provide our clients with results quickly and on budget.
